Social Sciences
The Social Sciences Department explores the complexities of human society, behavior, and institutions. Through disciplines such as history, political science, psychology, sociology, and economics, students gain a deeper understanding of how individuals and communities interact, evolve, and shape the world. Social sciences help us interpret human behavior, understand cultural and political systems, and analyze the forces that influence social change.
The Social Sciences Associate of Arts (AA) strengthens students’ analytical, research, and communication skills through the study of human behavior, historical development, political structures, and economic systems. Students majoring in Social Sciences will develop a strong foundation in critical thinking, data interpretation, and evidence-based reasoning. As they progress through their degree pathway, students will explore major theoretical frameworks, historical movements, and contemporary social issues. Any student seeking a career that involves understanding people, institutions, or societal trends will benefit from the skills gained through the Social Sciences AA.
Key transferable skills gained include, but are not limited to:
- Critical Thinking & Analysis: Evaluating social systems, historical events, and human behavior.
- Communication: Clear writing, informed discussion, and effective presentation of ideas.
- Research: Collecting, analyzing, and interpreting qualitative and quantitative data.
- Cultural Awareness: Understanding diverse communities, identities, and global perspectives.
- Problem-Solving: Applying theory to real-world social, political, and economic challenges.
Even if students do not pursue careers directly tied to social sciences, the AA provides valuable skills applicable across industries. Employers value individuals who can analyze information, understand human behavior, communicate effectively, and make informed decisions. Social sciences courses also promote empathy, cultural understanding, and ethical reasoning—qualities essential for leadership and collaboration in any field.
